Bikur Cholim's Mission is to provide assistance to the sick, homebound and vulnerable members in the community, and to provide support to families in crisis.
The Bikur Cholim Movement
The Hebrew words "Bikur Cholim" literally means "visiting the sick". This act of kindness has a vaunted tradition in Jewish history, and serves as the archetype for a wide range of kind and charitable acts that have been at the foundation of Jewish life since its origin.
For centuries, an essential component of Jewish community life has been the organization of societies to perpetuate these ideals-Bikur Cholim societies. While visiting the sick has always been at the core of Bikur Cholim work, many of these societies grew to encompass other activities-different activities depending on the community, but all in furtherance of their shared goal-to ameliorate the suffering of others with devotion, loving-kindness and charity.
This noble tradition lives on today in Jewish communities all over the world. The name Bikur Cholim is synonymous with the ideals of caring, compassion and generosity.
