Statement by our Rabbi Alan W. Bright on the heinous murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan z”l

It is with profound sorrow that we address the tragic and senseless murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan in the United Arab Emirates. This heinous act of antisemitic terrorism has not only taken the life of a devoted spiritual leader but has also cast a shadow over the communities he served with unwavering dedication.

Rabbi Kogan, a 28-year-old Israeli Moldovan citizen and emissary of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, was instrumental in establishing and nurturing Jewish life in the UAE following the normalization of relations between Israel and the UAE in 2020. His commitment to fostering understanding and dispelling misconceptions about Judaism was evident in his daily interactions and the programs he spearheaded. Rabbi Kogan’s work was a beacon of light, promoting peace and coexistence in a region striving for harmony.

We must also acknowledge that the United Arab Emirates has proven itself to be a welcoming place of love and diversity. It is a nation that has opened its land and hearts to Israel and adherents of the Abrahamic faiths, creating an environment of mutual respect and coexistence. Rabbi Kogan’s work thrived in this atmosphere of inclusion and partnership, and his efforts were a reflection of the shared commitment to building bridges across faiths and cultures.

The UAE’s swift action in arresting three suspects connected to this atrocity demonstrates a commitment to justice and the safety of all its residents. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the murder as an “abhorrent act of antisemitic terrorism” and has vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

In the face of such profound loss, we must draw strength from Rabbi Kogan’s legacy. His life was a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and the pursuit of peace. Let us honour his memory by continuing his mission: fostering understanding, supporting one another, and standing united against hatred and violence.

May Rabbi Zvi Kogan’s memory be a blessing, and may we find comfort in the enduring impact of his life’s work.

With heartfelt condolences, ת.נ.צ.ב.ה

Rabbi Alan W. Bright
